While exploring Indian Key we often find hermit crabs wandering across the rocky path. Some of the shells they wear seem almost too cumbersome to permit them access to the nooks and crannies of the rocks they try to hide in. So as we walk along looking at the ruins of the ship wreckers settlement, we gather a few of them. When we find a suitable flat smooth area the captain draws the race course, a 3 foot diameter circle with a half foot diameter inner circle. We then select one crab per person. All crabs are put onto the inner circle, the starting gate, at the same time. Everyone has to be very quiet if they want to see the crabs run. The first crab to cross the outer circle is the winner.
