June and July: white-crowned pigeon are building nests in the mangrove islands. Most of our brown pelicans have migrated north, perhaps for nesting along the Indian River area near Stuart, Florida.
August: Barn swallows begin their migration south. White-crowned pigeons depart for the Bahamas.
September: the annual hawk migration begins.
October: osprey return to their nests to begin a new cycle with their same mates, a lifelong committment. Nests can weigh up to 80 pounds. Magnificent frigate birds begin displaying their red throat pouches.
November: cormorants begin courtship and nest building.
December: the first norther brings temperatures down to 55. The next day it heats up to 85 stimulating plants to produce blossoms. This will happen numerous times during our winter as northers come and go.
January: magnificent frigatebirds are still courting. The black males inflate their red throat pouches as big as apples. I'm impressed. Hope the girl frigate birds are, too.
